A Guaranteed Break

Hi there and welcome to Cowboy Computer Repair! On this Thursday’s blog, we will be looking at commitments, and the price of breaking them.

One day you accept a job to go far from your normal business area, making preparations along the way. However, some guy named Murphy gets involved and it only goes downhill from there. Horrible weather out of no where, your car is refusing to cooperate, your shoulder is acting up again and worst of all, you really don’t want to work on the weekend. With all the planets aligning to stop you, what will you do?

The first option is always the easiest. Give up. Turn right around, open your door, take your shoes off and collapse on your couch. It does make for some good rest, it’s not like turning down this one job will end your entire career, right? Option two would be a slight modification of this, call the client and tell them you just cant do it that day. Perhaps this will end amicably, with both of you agreeing to reschedule to a different date. This makes for a nice middle ground, as you’re not giving up outright, simply deciding discretion instead of an all out withdrawal. Sadly, this option fails to take a couple things in to consideration.

The person you’re doing the job for has already made the time for you to come by, meaning they would most likely need to reschedule something else entirely to make time for you to arrive. Additionally, one thing that may be even more important than the last depending on who you are, you have to consider your reputation. While it’s entirely possible you stand to get a bad review should you fail to show up to one job at the agreed time, it’s also possible you will gain a glowing review for showing up in spite of the weather, even if you needed a borrowed car to do so.

This not only applies to work, but meeting with friends as well. After all, who would want to even try to organize hangouts with someone who constantly cancels or fails to show up? So even when it’s a short but sweet get together, if a mountain gets in your way, move it, because you wont know it’s the last time until you never go again.

Thanks for reading and I hope you learned something from my own lesson in life.
